Sharin Baldwin PhD, MSc, PG Dip, BSc (Hons), HV, RM, RN, QN, FiHV

Dr Sharin Baldwin joined the iHV Projects and Evaluations team in July 2023 as Senior Health Visiting Research Lead.

Sharin brings with her a wealth of research knowledge and experience. Sharin is a trained nurse, midwife, health visitor with over 26 years of experience working in the NHS. Sharin qualified as a health visitor in 2002 and has experience working in a range of leadership, professional development and clinical academic roles throughout her career. Sharin served as a Trustee of the iHV between October 2021 – April 2023.

Sharin completed her PhD at King’s College London in September 2020 as part of an NIHR Clinical Doctoral Fellowship, and remains the only health visitor in the UK to be awarded this fellowship. As part of her PhD, Sharin has led and successfully completed the New Dad Study (NEST), resulting in numerous publications and national/international recognition. Sharin has experience in securing research grants, fellowships and awards. Following her PhD, Sharin completed a year in Warwick Clinical Trials Unit (part-time) after being awarded the NIHR Development and Skills Enhancement Award. Sharin currently holds an honorary position at Western Sydney University as adjunct Research Fellow.

Sharin is passionate about increasing research capability and capacity within health visiting. Sharin’s research interests are perinatal mental health (fathers’ mental health in particular) and emotional wellbeing of the workforce. Sharin is a Selection Committee Member for the NIHR Local Authority Fellowship Programme and a member of the NIHR Nursing and Midwifery Incubator. Sharin has co-authored book chapters in health visiting textbooks and has a good track record of publications in national and international peer-reviewed journals. She is an editorial board member for the Journal of Health Visiting and peer reviewer for numerous professional bodies and journals, including NIHR, iHV, British Journal of Nursing, British Journal of Midwifery, BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth, BMC Psychiatry, BMJ Open, International Journal of Nursing Studies, Mental Health Practice, PLOS One, Primary Health Care Research and Development, Journal of Health Visiting and Journal of Midwifery.

Interim Divisional Lead Nurse Children and Families Division (BFS)

Alis’ experience ranges from paediatric nursing, school nursing to health visiting. In her current role as Divisional lead for health visiting, Alis is responsible for the safety and quality clinical practice delivery of the health visiting service in Birmingham.

Alis has regular appearances on the local radio show for her local community on current public health issues. Alis is a prestigious Mary Seacole scholar and undertook a project with the local community and health visitors in tackling health inequalities.

Alis is currently undertaking her doctorate and is focusing on utilising appreciative inquiry as a methodology in engaging with communities in tackling health inequalities.

Hilda Beauchamp, Perinatal & Infant Mental Health Lead

Responsible for:

  • Supporting the national and international work of the mental health department
  • Leading the mental health department contribution to the PATH Interreg VA 2Seas Programme
  • Supporting Head of Mental Health to develop iHV PIMH strategy, projects and practice development
  • Supporting delivery and quality assurance of PIMH Champions’ Programmes
  • Support engagement and co-production with parents and professionals in relating to mental health projects

Georgina Mayes, Health Visiting Professional Lead (Quality and Policy)

Following experience as a staff nurse at Westminster Hospital, Helen became a health visitor in 1982 and worked in NW London until taking up a research post at University College London in 1986. At UCL Helen joined a research team to work on a national study of the determinants of childhood vaccine uptake published as “The Peckham Report”. Vaccine acceptance has continued to be the main focus of her research and teaching.  She has extensive experience conducting research into parents’, young people’s and professionals’ knowledge and attitudes to vaccines and in the determinants of vaccine uptake. This has included research with the Gypsy Traveller community. Helen contributes to immunisation training for health care professionals locally and nationally and frequently discusses vaccination issues in the media. She is a co-author of modules in the e-learning for healthcare immunisation programme https://www.e-lfh.org.uk/programmes/immunisation/.

Helen chairs the multi-disciplinary committee hosted by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health which oversees the content and development of the personal child health record (red book). In this capacity, she was a member of the group that developed the WHO growth charts included in PCHRs.
