Alis’ experience ranges from paediatric nursing, school nursing to health visiting. In her current role as Divisional lead for health visiting, Alis is responsible for the safety and quality clinical practice delivery of the health visiting service in Birmingham.

Alis has regular appearances on the local radio show for her local community on current public health issues. Alis is a prestigious Mary Seacole scholar and undertook a project with the local community and health visitors in tackling health inequalities.

Alis is currently undertaking her doctorate and is focusing on utilising appreciative inquiry as a methodology in engaging with communities in tackling health inequalities.

  • Supporting delivery and quality assurance of PIMH Champions’ Programmes
  • Support engagement and co-production with parents and professionals in relating to mental health projects

Following experience as a staff nurse at Westminster Hospital, Helen became a health visitor in 1982 and worked in NW London until taking up a research post at University College London in 1986. At UCL Helen joined a research team to work on a national study of the determinants of childhood vaccine uptake published as “The Peckham Report”. Vaccine acceptance has continued to be the main focus of her research and teaching.  She has extensive experience conducting research into parents’, young people’s and professionals’ knowledge and attitudes to vaccines and in the determinants of vaccine uptake. This has included research with the Gypsy Traveller community. Helen contributes to immunisation training for health care professionals locally and nationally and frequently discusses vaccination issues in the media. She is a co-author of modules in the e-learning for healthcare immunisation programme https://www.e-lfh.org.uk/programmes/immunisation/.

Helen chairs the multi-disciplinary committee hosted by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health which oversees the content and development of the personal child health record (red book). In this capacity, she was a member of the group that developed the WHO growth charts included in PCHRs.

Sir Albert Aynsley-Green received his honorary Fellowship of the Institute of Health Visiting at the iHV’s seventh annual celebration event held in London on Tuesday 3 December 2019.  His honorary Fellowship is awarded in recognition for his significant continued advocacy for children and particularly the lives of vulnerable children.

Sir Albert Aynsley-Green is a paediatric endocrinologist and Professor Emeritus of Child Health at University College London. He was appointed as the first Children’s Commissioner for England in 2005 and was knighted by the Queen in 2006 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the education and health of children. More recently Sir Al has served as President of the BMA and he is currently visiting professor of advocacy for children and childhood at Nottingham Trent University. He is also author of ‘The British Betrayal of Childhood’.
