iHV Postnatal Contraception Test and Learn Project – Funded by Sexual Health Reproductive Health and HIV Innovation Fund

This project built on our previous sexual and reproductive health project. It explored health visitors’ current practice alongside the barriers and enablers, to maximise and extend the health visitor’s universal role in postnatal contraception to include advice on contraceptive options and potential for prescribing.

Like all iHV projects, all elements were developed in partnership with practitioners with valuable frontline practitioner intelligence, gathered through our project scoping, which built on previous insights to co-produce a bespoke postnatal contraception training programme for Specialist Community Public Health Nurses, in partnership with Teesside University.

Evaluation of the insights and training informed local commissioning plans and system development. This work supports the national priority to reduce the burden of unplanned and unwanted pregnancies and support better pregnancy planning.

We now offer a half-day Postnatal Contraception training programme to health visitor services across the UK. This training and the e-learning have been endorsed by the Faculty of Reproductive and Sexual Health (FRSH).

Please contact [email protected] to find out more about having this training in your area.
