  • following Wednesday’s Budget, PHE welcomes the levy on sugary drinks which will operate in practice from 2018
  • Government’s commitment to the move of the ring-fenced public health grant to 100% business rate retention – PHE will fully engage with local government on this
  • LGA published Maintaining our momentum: Essays on four years of public health, which relates a number of different perspectives, from national to local, of those working across the system since the transfer of public health to local government in 2013
  • publication of new statistics on adult smoking habits in the UK – from 2010 to 2015, smoking became less common across all ages in the UK, with the largest decrease among 18 to 24 year olds
  • publication of 2017 Child Health Profiles, which provide a snapshot of child health and wellbeing for each local authority in England in an easily accessible format
  • inaugural PHE Quality Awards, celebrating quality, improvement, innovation and effectiveness.

Since late 2015, there has been a global shortage of the BCG vaccine. To protect those at risk Public Health England has secured a limited supply of BCG vaccine for babies who are eligible.

These documents explain why a brand of BGC vaccine without a UK licence is being used and why it is still recommended.

 

Short weekly update from the CEO of Public Health England (PHE), including:

  • PHE’s response to the 200 submissions received during their recent consultation on the redesign of the National Infection Service (NIS)
  • launch of a new campaign in the North West to highlight the dangers of taking antibiotics when you don’t need them and to trust in your doctor’s advice.  The North West was chosen as the pilot as they have a high prescribing rate, and PHE will use the results to assess whether this should be rolled out across the country.
  • Local Government Association published a new set of case studies to provide local areas with examples of good practice and practical insight to support their work on suicide prevention
  • First workshop of the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) training partners with the World Health Organization
  • Health Check 2017, an annual review of progress on developing a sustainable health and care system in England, shows that PHE continues to be one of the leading organisations in ensuring that our health system is sustainable: environmentally, socially, and financially
  • CATRIN, the Welsh version of PHE’s award-winning National Cancer Registration and Analysis Service in England, is now live for the whole of Wales, meaning national data on cancer is now seamlessly collected and quality assured across both countries.

  • PHE would welcome comments on their first digital strategy published last Friday.  This sets out how PHE will work across government, with their partners and across PHE to take advantage of the increasing opportunities of digital technology
  • Publication of new data to support local decision making, with updates to the Local Alcohol Profiles and the Local Tobacco Control Profiles for England
  • Several updates to the Public Health Outcomes Framework, including a number of new indicators
  • A visit to Germany’s national public health agency, the Robert Koch Institute
  • A visit to RIVM, the renowned National Institute for Public Health and the Environment in the Netherlands
  • The annual NHS Health Check conference
  • Publication of new training resources to support the NHS in advising people over 65 regarding dementia
  • New research, funded by Cancer Research UK and carried out by UK and US scientists, was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine regarding
  • NHS England has created a short animation for NHS staff, the wider public and patients to help explain how sustainability and transformation plans seek to improve health and care services for local people

  • PHE has supported Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership to publish an ambitious plan for public health that targets all stages of life, puts strong focus on prevention and clearly links better health and wellbeing with work prospects and the economy
  • PHE held a joint roundtable with the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy to look at how they can develop a return on investment tool for spend on prevention that draws on the evidence base, provides a clear appraisal model for investing in upstream prevention and endorses a step change in annual financial reporting of preventative spend
  • the return of PHE’s ActFAST campaign, which reminds people of the key symptoms of stroke and the importance of calling 999 immediately
  • the National Falls Prevention Coordination Group, coordinated by PHE, published a consensus statement that outlines ways to support effective and integrated commissioning of interventions to help prevent falls and fractures
  • a programme of ‘getting to know you’ events is being planned for PHE staff to see the potential of the move by 2024 to their new scientific campus in Harlow, Essex
  • congratulations to Professor Kevin Fenton, PHE’s Director of Health and Wellbeing, who will be embarking on a three-year secondment to Southwark Council starting in April

  • new PHE Muslim Network aims to promote greater understanding between colleagues, raise awareness of Muslim culture and support PHE’s commitment to be an inclusive and diverse workplace

PHE Children, Young People and Families team is seeking views of colleagues involved in the local commissioning and delivery of the National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) on the existing resources that Public Health England (PHE) provides to support the programme.

They would greatly appreciate you taking the time to complete the survey. The survey asks for your views on the NCMP Operational Guidance, national template letters, leaflets for parents, and elected members briefing.
