Bookings now open for iHV Evidence-based Practice Conference 2018!

Bookings are now open, with member discounts and early bird rates, for the iHV Evidence-based Practice Conference – promoting “The Best Start in Life” – taking place in Manchester on 7 March 2018.

We always seek to ensure our activities comply with the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative – our events are not and never will be sponsored by the formula milk industry.

 

This conference provides an excellent opportunity for health visitors, practice educators, SCPHN lecturers, early years workers and student health visitors to develop their role in supporting the “Best Start in Life” for all children.

It will be of interest to colleagues from the international community who are working within this arena. It provides a unique opportunity for an intense day of accredited CPD that is perfect towards revalidation and furthering the positive impact of your practice.

The iHV has gathered national speakers to provide practice-related updates from the latest research evidence, specialist practice, NICE guidance and beyond. There will also be papers and posters from health visitor peers, and academics sharing their recent research and innovation.

What an amazing day we had on Tuesday at the iHV leadership conference and annual celebration event to mark the iHV’s 5th birthday! With over 100 delegates, the room was buzzing all day, and we had a great line up of speakers.

iHV presents at European Midwives Association annual conference

On 23 September 2017, the iHV was invited to give a presentation at the European Midwives Association’s (EMA) annual conference, this year dedicated to Perinatal Mental Health (PMH). The conference, hosted by the national organisation of Spanish midwives known as Federacion de Asociaciónes de Matronas de España (FAME) in Madrid, was attended by high level representation from 35 European member states.

Melita Walker (iHV Perinatal Mental Health Lead) presented on behalf of the iHV on UK Policy and best practice in Perinatal Mental Health, discussing the UK approach to PMH and national policy and research direction for the UK.

The conference also heard from Mental Health Europe Director, Maria Nyman, who introduced the European landscape on Perinatal Mental Health, highlighting existing opportunities to further advance the issue at EU level. Presentations throughout the day shared good practice in PMH from across Europe and also the challenges faced by respective nations.

Following the formal presentations, Melita joined a working group to think through what the direction of travel should be in relation to PMH and the education and training for midwives. The agreed action from the workshop was that the EMA would develop a position statement on PMH that will enable the mental health of mothers and fathers to be seen as important as physical needs during the perinatal period. There was consensus that PMH should be a “red thread”, running through all midwifery care, not separate, or as an add-on, and that midwifery training should also be designed to integrate mental health alongside physical health.

“It was a privilege to represent the iHV at this event.  The EMA is a fantastic organisation, dedicated to improving outcomes for women and their families. The Institute has worked closely with our colleagues in midwifery services and understands the important role they play in achieving good health outcomes, which is why we have recently developed our Maternity PMH Champions programme. It was wonderful for the iHV to support this event, to share our learning and to contribute to raising parity of esteem for mental health across a huge geographical area. PMH is immensely complex and no one agency can achieve good outcomes alone. It is only by working together, in partnership, that we will realise our collective aspirations for a mentally well society.”

iHV delighted to sponsor Good Practice of Care for Women with Mental Health Conditions during Pregnancy

During Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week, we are delighted announce our sponsorship of the Good Practice of Care for Women with Mental Health Conditions during Pregnancy conference – taking place in London on Friday 23 June.

This one-day conference seeks to bring together those professionals along the Perinatal Mental Health pathway of care to understand what constitutes good practice of care for women with mental health conditions during pregnancy. This is one of the things the iHV works very hard to do through our multi-agency training. We know that if you bring representatives of the whole care pathway together at a local level- good things begin to happen.

Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health confirmed as new keynote session

The iHV is delighted to announce the new keynote session for its evidence-based practice conference (taking place on 7 March) is the recently published State of Child Health Report 2017 from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH).

This landmark report into the State of Child Health calls for Government to introduce a comprehensive, national, child health and wellbeing strategy, reverse cuts to public health, and tighten controls over smoking, the sale of alcohol and advertising of foods high in fat, salt and sugar.

Join us on 7 March at our conference for this fantastic opportunity to listen as one of the report’s key clinical advisers presents the report and its findings, and then ask questions on the report during the panel discussion.
