The need for timely postnatal information and support is highlighted in the UK Women’s Health Strategy (2022) – https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/womens-health-strategy-for-england

Despite health visitors being ideally placed to have conversations with women and their families about contraceptive choices, including the interpregnancy period, our own research revealed that they lacked the confidence or training to provide consistent postnatal contraception advice and support. By training alongside midwives, this can strengthen the provision of postnatal contraception advice and continuity between midwifery and health visiting.
