The regulation of health visitors in the future – free webinar

15th March 2024

Online webinar hosted by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN)

Online webinar: Professional Regulation NMC regulatory review and implications for SCPHN registrants
Date: Monday 29 April 2024
Time: 12:00 – 13:30pm

This event is open to all NMC registrants, both RCN members and non-members

During 2023, the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) published the consultation response to their proposals for modernising professional regulation. The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), the independent regulator for Nurses, Midwives and Specialist Community Public Health Nurses (SCPHN), is one of the nine professional regulators that will be affected by the reforms that will span the 4 key areas of regulation:

  • the governance and operating framework
  • education and training
  • registration
  • fitness to practise

Information about the regulatory review process and updates provided by the NMC can be found on their governance webpages under the ‘Better, safer regulation’ sub-heading.

The iHV has hosted several members networking events, published a Voices blog on this topic, and has worked closely with partner organisations to explore the key issues at stake. We have also discussed particular issues directly with the NMC – raising questions over the use of protected titles, regulation of post-registration qualifications, and the maintenance of standards for education in any absence of the SCPHN part of the NMC register.

To support wider discussion and examination of these issues, iHV joins other professional partners in supporting a webinar on 29 April, 12:00 – 13:30pm, open to all NMC registrants, regardless of professional affiliation. This unique event, is jointly organised by the Community Practitioners’ and Health Visitors’ Association (CPHVA), Institute of Health Visiting (iHV), Queen’s Nursing Institute (QNI), Royal College of Midwives (RCM), Royal College of Nursing (RCN), School and Public Health Nursing Association (SAPHNA) and hosted by the RCN.

This event is important for the workforce to help shape the future regulation of SCPHN practitioners, for protecting the public, maintaining quality in practice, and safeguarding professionals in the delivery of their vital work.

By attending this free webinar, you will hear from senior representatives from the NMC and have an opportunity to ask questions about NMC regulatory review proposals. The iHV believes the webinar is important for enabling a wider workforce conversation about the future regulation of SCPHN practitioners. Professional regulation is essential for protecting the public, maintaining quality in practice, and safeguarding professionals in the delivery of their vital work. We hope you will join us and be part of developing a better understanding of the critical issues for achieving safer regulation.
