25th April 2023
Our highly popular iHV Insights webinar programme for iHV members continues with our next event taking place on Thursday 18 May 2023 from 3:30 to 4:30pm.
This iHV Insights will cover the topic of Let’s Talk Heart Health.
Too many lives across the world are being cut short by non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including heart disease – the WHO has described them as a major global challenge and the biggest threat to our nation’s health. Throughout our history, as health visitors, we have always responded to the biggest public health threats of our time – what is our response to this growing threat?
Tackling NCDs is complex and will take a whole system response to tackle the wider determinants of health. The good news is that change is possible. And like almost every aspect of our health and wellbeing, the foundations for ‘heart health’ are laid in the earliest years of life. Health visitors have an important role to play in supporting families with the four biggest risk factors of: tobacco use, physical inactivity, the harmful use of alcohol, and unhealthy diets.
But the evidence is clear, that simplistic advice to ‘eat less and exercise more’ and a ‘tick box’ approach rarely works. We will hear from Professor Crispin Day who developed the evidence-based Family Partnership Model on why partnership working is so important. How we communicate matters. Helping is not easy and all families will have different needs. At face value, some families may seem resistant to change, they may be defensive, particularly about topics like obesity or smoking, and reject the health visitor. How do we get past that and build effective partnerships that lead to better engagement and change?
Key topics and speakers will include:
- Heart disease, a global threat: maximising the role of the health visitor – Alison Morton, iHV CEO
- Working in partnership: moving beyond ‘eat less, exercise more’ – Professor Crispin Day, Centre for Parent and Child Support, in conversation with Alison Morton.
- Let’s talk heart health: How to get involved – Vicky Gilroy, iHV Head of Projects and Evaluation
- Q&A with Speakers
