Access our new Motor Development Toolkit – free for all iHV members

30th June 2025

The Government is leading a mission to create the ‘healthiest generation of children ever’, with a target for 75% of children to achieve a ‘good level of development’ by 2028.  And health visiting will have an important role to play in achieving this. Our new Motor Development Toolkit has been designed by leading experts to equip health visiting practitioners in the promotion and assessment of motor development. Make sure you stay up-to-date with the latest evidence and best practice and top-up your CPD.

It is recognised that late identification of development needs has significant implications for each child’s future outcomes. One aspect of being ready for school is early recognition and intervention to support families whose babies and children may have motor developmental delay.

There is a recognised gap in current training and resources on motor development to support health visitors and their teams working with families.

With support from Novartis UK, we have collaborated with leading paediatricians, Action Cerebral Palsy, practitioners, and parents and carers to develop a range of resources to support your practice.

The new toolkit is freely accessible to all iHV members via the iHV LEARN platform.

The e-learning programme and accompanying toolkit are designed to support you to:

  • Confidently recognise typical and atypical motor development.
  • Understand a range of motor development conditions, including Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), Cerebral Palsy, and Muscular Dystrophy.
  • Have sensitive conversations with families about motor development.
  • Identify red flags for developmental delay, make a high-quality referral, whilst continuing to support families while they await assessment.
  • Identify amber flags for developmental delay and support for families.
  • Offer evidence-based advice to promote motor development and high-quality ongoing support.

The resources include:

  • e-learning taking you through each stage of motor development (gross, fine and oral development).
  • an A-Z of quality-assured resources to support both you and your families.
  • parent voices and filmed resources.
  • access to additional CPD.

Why not head over to iHV LEARN now and take a look, you just need to log on to the iHV website as a member then access the iHV LEARN tab and then All Programmes – Motor Development Toolkit.
