GPP Managing childhood illnesses

This Good Practice Point was published during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. Many parents may be feeling worried or anxious about the health of their family at this time. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, 2 million children aged 0-5 years attended A&E every year, with rates increasing by 24% in the last six years despite a falling birth rate and improvements in overall child health.

However, at this time, when everyone is preoccupied with COVID-19, it’s really important to realise that all the ‘normal’ infections that can make children and babies really unwell still remain and there is a major risk that parents may delay bringing their child to the attention of a healthcare professional even if they are unwell.
