Introducing a new iHV programme of Ready Steady Mums Community Groups
Ready Steady Mums is a volunteer-led community exercise movement for mums, a programme run by the Institute of Health Visiting.
We know that being active helps us embrace motherhood, be healthy and balanced, and set a great example to our kids. But what exercise is safe? How do I fit it in my busy lifestyle?
What does Ready Steady Mums provide?
Our on-line programmes provide the guidance you need to be physically active in pregnancy and beyond; and our community-based walking groups give you the social support and motivation to get out in the fresh air. Ready Steady Mums are passionate volunteers, and everything we offer is free.
Go to Ready Steady Mums website to find out more about how we can support you:
- Prenatal exercise
- Postnatal exercise
- Find a local walking group
There are some tips for mums to help in setting up a new group on the RSM website.
Plus there’s handy hints for health visitors and links to support materials too!
Our online programmes have been created by experts as general advice for pregnant women and new mothers, but every pregnancy is different. We recommend you seek medical advice before participating and be under the supervision of an approved professional fitness trainer.
Our local Socialcise groups are run by volunteers with no fitness training and Ready Steady Mums does not take responsibility for vetting the Group Leaders. Mothers joining the groups do so entirely at their own risk and are fully responsible for choosing the level at which they participate, and for their health and safety during the sessions, as well as that of their children.
All the information and guidance presented on the Ready Steady Mums website is for educational and resource purposes only. It is there to help you make informed decisions about physical activity and exercise after childbirth. It is NOT a substitute for any advice given to you by your midwife, health visitor or GP.
Who are we?
Ready Steady Mums is community led, our Group Leaders are volunteers; local mums, supported by health visitors and the Ready Steady Mums team at the Institute of Health Visiting. Fundraising is a vital part of enabling us to support these volunteers in setting up and running their Socialcise groups.

HV setting up new RSM group said
The group was a success, despite it raining we had 15 mums turn up :0) They walked to a local park, did the buggy exercises and then went to Morrison’s cafe for free tea and cakes afterwards. Virgin Active Gym also came and gave all the mums a bag of goodies. The local press was there and we are waiting for the article this week.
