In memory of Alis Rasul, highly respected health visitor and iHV trustee

1st May 2026

The Institute of Health Visiting (iHV) is deeply saddened to hear the news of the recent death of Alis Rasul, a highly respected health visitor, paediatric nurse and leader. As a Trustee of the Institute of Health Visiting since 2021, Alis was a valued and committed champion for children, families and the health visiting profession. We pay tribute to a wonderful life, sadly cut short too early.

Alis dedicated her professional life to improving outcomes for children and families through public health nursing, both nationally and through her work in Birmingham and across the Black County. Alis started her nurse training in 2003, and her career spanned paediatric nursing, school nursing and health visiting, where she held a range of leadership roles within community health services. Alis was also part of the senior leadership team within the Children’s and Families Division in addition to corporate services within Birmingham Community Healthcare (BCHC) Foundation Trust for many years.  Alis’s most recent position was in Dudley. Across all her roles, she was recognised for her deep commitment to prevention, early intervention and equity.

Alis’s contribution to the profession was recognised nationally as a Mary Seacole Leadership Scholar. During her career, Alis led influential work on perinatal mental health, community engagement and culturally responsive practice, all focused on tackling inequalities affecting children and families. She was widely regarded as a thoughtful and values‑driven leader, committed to using research to improve practice and outcomes – and was part way through completing her PhD in population health, focused on tackling entrenched health inequalities.

iHV CEO, Alison Morton said:

“Alis was a very special health visitor and values-driven leader whose drive to advocate for babies, children and families – and champion the role of health visiting – was unwavering and an inspiration to many. Alis leaves a lasting legacy, with her work impacting positive change at both a local and national level. We pay tribute to her tireless support of the iHV through her work as a Trustee. The news will come as a shock to so many across the family of health visiting – we have lost a dear colleague and friend.”

Yasmin Shakeel, Service Manager and BCHC Cultural Ambassador, reflected:

“Alis was an inspiration to me and so many others – she was confident, assertive, and most importantly empowering others of all levels and walks of life. Alis had personally helped me through a difficulty which I will remember forever. She showed me that I can also be successful in my career just as she was. Alis was kind and caring and was very passionate about health visiting service.”

Alis will be profoundly missed by her family, friends and colleagues, and by the many professionals and families whose lives were touched by her work. Her insight and compassion left a lasting impression on all who worked with her. The Institute of Health Visiting Board, staff and members extend their deepest condolences to Alis’s family, her husband and four children.

Birmingham Community Health Care Trust will be holding a memorial event in the coming weeks to celebrate Alis’s life and contributions.
