Changing Conversations – Understanding behaviour – Funded by The Burdett Trust for Nursing
This project, supported by a grant from The Burdett Trust for Nursing, aimed to raise health visitors’ awareness of the practical and ethical issues of restrictive and restraining practices in the early years. It aimed to promote the importance of respectful, positive behavioural support strategies that safeguard the rights of young children with disabilities. Improving health visitors’ awareness and confidence in this area of their work will enable them to support and encourage parents to implement positive behavioural strategies with their children from an early age and avoid restrictive practices which can become difficult to change once embedded.
The project had a number of core deliverables:
- Development and dissemination of a National Survey to health visitors to determine current understanding, knowledge, confidence and training needs about restrictive practice in the early years, to inform baseline and training development
- Development and dissemination of a National Survey by The Challenging Behaviour Foundation to understand the views of parents/carers and support the development of resources
- Insights from parents/carers collated through a focus group led by The Challenging Behaviour Foundation
- Scoping of current evidence base for restrictive practices and managing behaviour in the early years
- Development of resources and an animation on least restrictive practice. This was developed through co-production, and is accessible to health visitors via the iHV website
- Develop and deliver 4 half-day workshops for health visitors in specialist roles (SEND, HV for disability) and share resources through a series of webinars
- Evaluation of impact
We have also been able to combine this training with our Changing Conversations Autism training which we have developed into one full-day training and can offer this to health visitors services across the UK.
