Changing Conversations – Funded by The Burdett Trust for Nursing
This project aimed to raise awareness and understanding of the needs of families who have an autistic child, or a child who is showing signs of autism pre diagnosis. This was achieved through the co-production of resources and training for health visitors who are in the unique position to universally support families of pre-school children.
The project set out with a number of core deliverables:
- Development and dissemination of a National Survey to health visitors to determine current knowledge, confidence and training needs in autism, to inform baseline and training development
- Development and dissemination of a National Survey to understand families’ experiences of health visitor support for autism
- Co-produce the resource with involvement of field experts and parents
- Scoping of current evidence base for autism
- Design a toolkit of resources
- Resources to support practice included in the toolkit
- Develop and deliver the awareness sessions to health visitors
- Evaluation and impact
We have also been able to develop a one full-day training programme on ‘Changing conversations around autism in the early years’ and can offer this to health visitors services across the UK. Please contact [email protected] to find out more about having this training in your area.
