iHV Director of Programmes, Dr Michelle Moseley, presented at today’s Public Health Wales event (The Best Start in Life: The Role of High Quality, Inclusive, and Family Focused services) – and was joined by Amanda Holland, iHV Professional Education, Learning and Development Lead.
The event, held in Cardiff, brought together those working in or influencing early years services in Wales, including policymakers, practitioners and partners across health, social care, education and the third sector. It featured insights and learning from leading organisations across the UK, alongside examples of good practice from Wales.
Participants had an opportunity to engage in discussion and networking, and to consider how the learning shared can support system-wide action on the recently published Public Health Wales resource - Best Start in Life: An Early Years Framework for Action - at local, regional and national levels.

In her presentation, Dr Michelle Moseley spoke about how the Institute of Health Visiting influences health visiting practice by facing the challenges and supporting opportunities. This was enhanced by the opportunity to deliver a tabletop session facilitated by Amanda Holland which allowed attendees to engage in an open and interactive discussion – where they shared findings from the latest iHV annual survey and explored current priorities in health visiting practice.

The session showcased examples of positive practice from across Wales and the UK. It provided a valuable space to exchange experiences, reflect on challenges and successes, and make meaningful connections to support work in improving outcomes for babies, children and their families.
Michelle and Amanda were amongst an array of passionate experts in the early years including iHV Fellow Sally Hogg, colleagues from Public Health Wales, Better Start Blackpool, and Black Mothers Matter – all striving to improve outcomes for babies, children and families by focusing and driving the narrative to an enhanced early years provision. It was wonderful to be presenting in Wales where both Michelle and Amanda started their health visiting careers.

The iHV welcomes the opportunity to raise the profile of health visiting and supports the newly launched ‘Best Start in Life: An Early Years Framework for Action’. This benchmark is a useful tool and it will interesting to observe how it impacts the first 1000 days by underpinning national and organisational policy.
