22nd March 2024
This week, World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) was celebrated across the globe. The 21st day of the 3rd month (i.e., 21 March) is selected to raise awareness of Down syndrome which is the genetic variation of trisomy 21. WDSD was established to create a single global voice advocating for the rights, inclusion and wellbeing of people with Down syndrome.
The theme for this year’s WDSD was #EndTheSterotypes – selected to highlight that stereotypes are harmful and can limit the life-chances of people with Down syndrome. In fact, they are harmful to all people living with genetic differences, neurodiversity and disabilities.
#EndTheSterotypes was a consistent theme at our recent iHV SEND conference held earlier this month in Hertfordshire. As part of our ongoing ambition at the iHV to ensure that all babies and children have the very best life from the start – and to raise awareness and promote positive messages around genetic difference and SEND – we are delighted to share musician Chris Read’s song and experiences of raising a child with Down syndrome that he shared in his presentation at our SEND conference.
Chris is a songwriter, producer, half of the musical-comedy duo “Harry and Chris”, and father of three. When his son Theo was born, Chris wrote the song “Every Atom of You” about his family’s experience, people’s reactions, and their journey navigating his diagnosis.
No spoilers – we encourage you to watch the recording and hear Chris tell his own story. By making this open access, we hope that Chris’ powerful message will help to drive real change as we all strive to create a world where every child is valued, regardless of their diagnosis – looking beyond labels and celebrating difference – and ensuring that all babies, children and families get the support that they need.
